Tegancat is much more than a talented female vocal trio from Winnipeg, Canada.
Comprised of members Grace Murillo, Janice Baris and Trish Magsino, they create a
unique blend of pop and r&b influenced by many popular music styles. With producer
/songwriter/musician Jim Stoeber and DJ Farley laying down the grooves they have a
winning combination. Behind the scenes is a network of collaborators, co-writers,
musicians, vocalists, graphic artists and more. "Pleasure" is their latest release
following the 1999 album “Groove Control”. This enhanced CD contains a full length
music video and 6 scorching new tracks. Featured is a duet with Australian rapper
“Elie” as well as a duet with Canadian vocalist “Keith Javier”. One of the tracks,
“We Got It Goin” is also featured on the Tegancat Music co-produced 2000 release
“Dreamscapes - A collection of Canadian Artists" compilation CD.
In July, 1999 Tegancat did a promotional tour in Florida, with several performances in
Tampa and West Palm Beach, and a radio interview in Orlando. Shortly after their return
they performed at the WorldBeat Festival in Winnipeg during the Pan Am Games. They
are a favorite act for many Winnipeg events and clubs. Recently they have performed on
Dance Television(DTV) for a series pilot and again at the WorldBeat Festival 2000.
The beginnings of the group Tegancat goes back to 1995 when producer Jim Stoeber
attended a concert at which Grace and Janice were performing. Extremely impressed
by their individual performances he introduced himself and set up a meeting where
they agreed to join forces in recording a compilation CD. This spawned the release
of a CD in 1997 which featured Janice, Grace and recording artist Monaliza Mendoza.
At this time they were featured as individual singers, as in a various artist compilation
with no real group involvement. In early 1998 Trish Magsino, who had previously recorded
demos at Tegancat Music, contacted Jim with interest in doing some more recording. This
call from Trish sparked an idea to form a vocal trio with Trish, Grace and Janice. The
three artists were already acquaintances and it didn’t take long for them to agree that
forming a group would be a very good thing. Many practices and performances later it
was time to record a CD. In late 1998 the recording began, the performances continued,
and in June 1999 “Groove Control” was released.
Tegancat’s three distinct voices blend seamlessly together creating a beautiful collage
of music and sound. Grace’s voice is strong and soulful, with a natural gift for improvisation,
Janice has a very unique pop style voice, sometimes described as “angelic”, and Trish coming
from a musical theater background is very versatile and has an exceptionally sweet voice.
Together they truly have “got it goin”.
The three members of Tegancat have been branching out with some solo efforts. A CD by Grace
(wonderful) was released in 2002 and a new group "TRU" (with Grace + Janice) is finishing
recording tracks for a spring 2004 CD release -- trumusic.ca
